How do I get the best result?
Lay the coin flat on a plain, dark surface in soft daylight, fill the circle on the screen with it and avoid flash glare. Photograph both sides: on many coins the mint mark is on the back. If you can read the date or mint mark yourself, type it in Add details. Never clean a coin to make it easier to read; cleaning destroys its value.
The year or mint mark is wrong. What can I do?
On the result, tap the year or the mint mark and pick the right one. Pocket Change updates the value at once. The result also shows where the mint mark sits on that kind of coin, and “no mint mark” is a real answer for many older Philadelphia coins.
How are values worked out?
Each coin (date, mint mark, design and variety) has one entry in Pocket Change’s price guide, so the same coin always shows the same values, whoever scans it. The guide gives what a typical, uncertified coin sells for in each grade from Good (G-4) to Mint State (MS-65), and the result highlights the range for the grade we estimate from your photos. Most coins in circulation are worth face value, and we say so. Silver, gold and copper coins also show a melt value from today’s spot price; a coin is never shown below its melt or face value. The guide is written by an AI model from general market knowledge: these are estimates, not dealer offers. For a coin that may be worth more than about $500, ask a reputable dealer or have it graded by PCGS or NGC before you sell. Each result also links to sold listings on eBay so you can check real prices.
Errors and varieties
For each coin, Pocket Change lists the known errors and varieties of that exact date and mint mark (for example a doubled die) with what to look for and what a confirmed one is worth. Use a magnifier and good light. Most coins are not errors; when you think you have one, a dealer or grading service can confirm it.
Where is my collection? What if I get a new iPhone?
Your collection is stored on your iPhone and included in your iCloud or computer backup. Set up a new iPhone from that backup and your collection comes with it. You can also export your collection as a spreadsheet from the Collection tab.
